Week Two: A Week of Non-Scale Victories

Week two wasn’t easy, but I’m already feeling stronger and I know for a fact that I’m getting faster! My boyfriend has noticed my tiny muscles as well, and there’s something so satisfying about being able to lift more weight and run faster. These are “non scale victories” and even though the number on the scale might be staying the same right now, there are plenty of amazing gains to celebrate this week.

Trainer Liam kicked my butt with the Extreme Burn 45 this week. We were doing two minute intervals with very short recovery times, plenty of upper body training through planks and push ups. He talked about how important it is to train the front of the body and the back of the body rather than to think about “arm day” or “leg day”. I love how each trainer explains how the exercises are affecting your body, and the purpose of each exercise. I’m able to hold my planks sliiiiiightly longer than I used to, which is a big accomplishment!  Liam even came up to me after class and said he could see I was having big improvements.

Trainer Christian had us sweating and praying for survival until the final buzzer went off. At one point my eyes creeped up to the clock on the wall, and when I looked back down, my treadmill neighbor and I exchanged glances and laughed at the amount of time we had left in class. Christian’s technique of 20 seconds sprinting, 10 seconds recovery worked though. I got my speed up to between 5.0 and 5.5 and felt very accomplished! I’ve never been able to run that fast. Interval training is going to be my key to becoming a better runner and seeing results, I can already tell.

I turned the big 30 this week! I can’t believe it. The start of a new decade and with it plenty of introspection. I took Christian’s Burn 60 class the day after my birthday and as I sweat my butt off and ran faster than I ever had before, I thought about how grateful I am for my body.  I thought about how grateful I am for this strange and wonderful life. We only get one body and we only get one life — time to make the most of both. When I was 22, this day seemed so far away, but as anyone who gets older will tell you, it goes by in the blink of an eye.

Gabs has been in Japan for the past week but she’ll be home in a few days. I’m personally shooting for three workouts this week, and hoping to drag her to a few as well! Hopefully we’ll see you there.
